Benefits of Membership

Code of Ethics & Mediation
Called the backbone of the organization, NYBA's Code of Ethics was written to ensure fair, professional business relations, conducted at the highest level of integrity. The first benefit of joining the NORTHWEST YACHT BROKERS ASSOCIATION is to join a professional network of your peers who have agreed to conduct business with the same high standards. Non-binding mediation is a proven way to settle grievances between brokers or between brokers and clients.

Boat Show Opportunities & Discounts
Nearly 30 years of quality floating shows has created the tradition of the Lake Union Boats Afloat Shows being the place to shop when buying a boat — whether sail or power, new or used, a large mega yacht or a small runabout perfect for gunkholing in the bountiful waters of the Pacific Northwest. As a NYBA member, you will realize significant savings on your show exhibitor fees and have the opportunity to meet the most qualified buyers in the region. Shop and compare: The NYBA-hosted shows continue to offer the best value in the Northwest.

Representation with Govermental Agencies
Through the NYBA, your concerns are being uniquely represented on the federal, state and local levels. In a three-year project, the NYBA worked with the Washington State Department of Revenue on the production of the Guide for Vessel Brokers & Dealers. It explains in detail what brokers and dealers need to know to comply with the complex state tax code. An ongoing project for the association, we continue to work with DOR on tax updates for members we also work closely with the Department of Licensing and other regulatory agencies.

Standard Forms
Standardized forms help members of the association know their paperwork is in order whether filing taxes or putting together a complicated boat transaction. The Standard
Brokerage Forms include: “Vessel Purchase & Sale Agreement,” “Listing Agreement” and the “Cooperative Brokerage Agreement.” Need a “Report of Sale” form? How about a “Non-Resident Exemption Certificate”? The NYBA’s packet of Standard Tax Forms contains the documents needed to comply with state regulatory agencies.

National Yacht Broker Certification Program
Yacht brokers now have a new benchmark for measuring their skills, abilities and performance. Boat sellers and buyers will soon be in a better position to select qualified, competent yacht brokers. Demonstrates your commitment to the profession by becoming certified, joining a national network of your peers and colleagues. CPYB certification sets you apart as a leader in your field. And you save money as a member of the NYBA. Association members qualify for a $500 savings on their national certification fees

Committee Activities
Whether it's the Ethics Committee, the Boat Show Committee, the Meetings & Programs Committee or the Brokers Certification Committee, brokers and dealers make up the structure of the association and make the decisions on important NYBA issues. And, supported by the NYBA professional staff, they produce results: Just a couple of recent examples include: The Surveyors Committee produced “Elements of a Good Purchase Survey,” a document now used by boat buyers, yacht brokers and marine surveyors during this critical phase when purchasing a boat; and the Forms Committee has produced a new "Vessel Purchase and Sales Agreement," and is updating the other forms.

Newsletter & Announcements
Periodic e-newsletters keep members informed on important issues affecting their businesses and the industry. Useful, relevant information, association business and other key elements to operating a successful business are passed along via regular communiqués to members. Flash updates, important notices and monthly announcements are part of a communications program designed to bring the professional yacht broker of the Pacific Northwest all the latest, up-to-date information. We archive much of the information at the "Member's Corner," found on our web site: nwyachtbrokers.com. There you will also find our standard forms, boat show articles and other valuable information for running a successful business.

Networking Opportunities
The association offers you the opportunity to network with your peers and business associates, providing you with the chance to continually explore new job possibilities, to expand co-brokering opportunities and to enhance business relationships with peers and colleagues. As a NYBA member you have shown your desire for professional integrity; other members will note and pursue that professionalism when looking for new brokers or when making decisions about with whom they will co-broker. Through the NYBA you have the opportunity to stay on top of both what you know and
who you know.

Meetings & Seminars
Learn invaluable information from a wide-range of guest speakers by attending the meetings and seminars of the NORTHWEST YACHT BROKERS ASSOCIATION. Whether it’s
“Yacht Sales & the Law,” the difference between Independent Contractors and Employees, or how to host a successful Open House, the NYBA provides valuable educational opportunities through its regular meetings and annual seminars. And, for added value, NYBA-hosted meetings are worth continuing education credits towards CPYB recertification.

Social Functions

And we believe that a little fun is in order from time to time. Join the NYBA for its blacktie holiday gala, an annual event that brings over 200 yacht brokers and their guests
together to celebrate the holiday season. Or you may want to attend a boat show party or a Brokers Open House. These social get-togethers are always a chance to meet new people, renew old relationships and share a toast to being a member of the community of professional yacht brokers. It’s an exclusive club: we invite you to join.

What Professional Yacht Brokers Say About NYBA

"There is more trust in working with a NYBA member. Many problems common to co-brokerage deals are
eliminated because I know I am working with a broker who has the same dedication to ethics and to improving the reputation of the broker/client relationship."
Bill King, Crow’s Nest Compass Point Marine Group

"The first thing an owner must do, if that person is serious about staying in business for the long haul, is to join the NYBA. Co-brokering, standard brokerage forms, the arbitration committee, the list of benefits for a NYBA member goes on. ”
—Al Hayes, Gig Harbor Yacht Sales

"The opportunity to meet qualified buyers at the boat shows is reason enough for someone to belong to the
association. Then when you add forms, certification, the tax manual and staying abreast of industry information, the benefits of membership are critical to the success of any yacht broker."
—Pat Jutte, Adventure Yachts
