The Briggs award, which in 2007 includes a $2,500 grant, recognizes a group or organization in the Northwest dedicated to promoting the fun, family-lifestyle of boating. The award and grant will help provide scholarships for Sail Sand PointÕs low-income youth sailing program.

“The Northwest Yacht Brokers Association is thrilled to present Sail Sand Point with the Jeffrey D. Briggs Award,” said Patrick Kelley, President of the Board of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association at a presentation ceremony, Wednesday at Magnuson Park. “Sail Sand Point has a strong track record in the Northwest of providing a fun and safe environment for kids, regardless of their background, to learn to sail. We're proud to contribute to their success.”

Sail Sand Point fosters a “be safe” awareness on the water and develops an appreciation of boating among youth, provides learn-to-sail programs, advanced sailing programs and outrigger canoe programs for over 1,500 area youth and adults each year.

“Sail Sand Point is honored to receive the Briggs Award,” said Morgan Collins, Executive Director of Sail Sand Point. “This will go a long way to helping kids get on the water and get other groups excited about participating in sailing,” said Collins, whose organization in 2007 experienced a 15-percent increase in participation and opened a sister sailing program across Lake Washington in Kirkland.

Funded through the 2007 Lake Union Boats Afloat Show, the Jeffrey D. Briggs Award is a fundamental component of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association's Promote Boating Campaign and its founding mission to actively promote boating to the general public.
